parisian dj and producer kiddy smile embodies the lifeblood of house music past and present. his music flashes with nostalgia for those mid-80s new york basements where house music first came alive. ‘teardrops in the box’ pulses with the intoxicating energy of a ball in kiddy’s native paris, with its deep-rooted traditions but its intensely forward-focussing culture. following up on his fearsome debut ‘let a b!tch know’ on defected, kiddy smile has deployed the well-established remixing capabilities of mystic bill, a house champion from the underground schools of detroit and chicago. his ‘jersey dub’ eases back on the tempo for a syncopated strut to the garden state, while the ‘vocal mix’ is a bulkier prospect, emphasising kiddy’s growling vocal with some serious attitude bass. finally, his vinyl-exclusive ‘acid mix’ is specifically designed for getting twisted on dark, underground floors. cowbell and raw synths give ‘teardrops in the box’ unadulterated dancefloor credentials but this is more than a club record, the layers to this track run deep.

house crime bounce back into the mix following the utterly essential steven bc release with this sixth jaunt through tough and rough beats from the backalley of the house music story, this time narrated by anthony fade. the drums are dirty distorted machine splatters, the synths wobble under the weight of their own fuzziness and the samples crunch like they fell prey to the ropiest of mpcs, and that s precisely why fade s jams are so damn hot. wild 9 (acid mix) is especially potent, using a simple but deadly 303 line and all kinds of hectic textures, and bout it manages to make melodic deep sound as mean and nasty as it ever should.

roduced by roman flügel and jörn elling wuttke / published by copyright control mastered by dubplates and mastering, recut by stefan betke at scape mastering berlin alter ego recordings is very pleased, to rerelease this acid jesus classic, which is sounding just as fresh as it sounded, when it was released on klang elektronik back in 1997. the record was out of print since over 15 years and the tracks were not availlable on any digital platform. based on a very light, but striking ground construction, roman flügel and jörn elling wuttke leading their listeners over delicate fm-synthesis-sounds, minimal clonky bass patterns and snappy percussions to a long intermission breakdown, which reminds us of a starting boeing 747. where “interstate” plays like an inspired peakhour-jam should, “turkey skank” and “hibernation drive-, on the b-side, take on cooler tones for a headier machine-funk ride. the record was played out by dj’s like andrew weatherall, matthew herbert, luke slater, baby ford, dj hell, ellen allien, sven väth, ricardo villalobos, michael mayer etc.

juan ramos speaks twelve languages and loiters at the zoo. this is his second offering for the esp institute. last year his debut dropped us at the edge of oblivion and this follow-up release picks up right where he left us—atkm pumps right from the start with a collision of elastic percussion, tubular clinks and cranks under what sounds like fragments of our androgynous tour guide’s speech though a malfunctioning pa. halfway through the chaos she makes a left turn toward belgium where the drum programming fattens up and we acquire an optimistic shimmering of chords. on side b, globalizacio&#769,n a&#769,cido conjures imagery of a moonlit expedition on the hunt for lord-knows-what. many producers rely on jungle sounds, loosely appropriating some misguided sense of mysticism, but juan rules his own kingdom where he creates an ecosystem through synthesis and digital manipulation. the narrative quality of his production knows no limits and his ability to twist machines into this chorus of cyber-creatures puts him at the top of the food chain, however, no animals were harmed in the making of these two songs

unto the sons of the royal amphibians were given by lot, throughout their families and out of the tribe of zebulun, twelve records. the fifth ep in the treisar series sees moscoman deliver a new piece of dancefloor dazzle with the royal amphibian international ep. just across the nile kicks off down in the sluggish ends of the club. flamboyant claps and hypnotizing accordion stabs hint at brighter climates but the darkness of the bass threatens from beneath. express way explores broken beats before resolving into a 4x4 drive stocked with balearic flair and ominous vocal chops, while its dub counterpart brings the ep to a melodic close with an unhurried, glistening rework.

since its inception, shifted s avian imprint has gone from being a murderous, straight-laced techno imprint to what has now become a source for some of the best and most multi-faceted industrial music from the european quarters. we re not sure of verge s true identity, it could either be one of the label s existing artists, the mysterious shifted himself, or even an artist like blawan riding incognito (don t quote us on that, though!) solitary and crest-fallen, this magnetic collection of tunes feed off one another with utter ease and simplicity. they re not merely a selection of sound experiments but rather a unitary cloud of sonics which leave the listener with a powerful mental image. the feeling of dusk, the water dropping off the leaves, the cold breeze of autumn. this is a blinding foray into the darkest corners of contemporary industrial experimentation.

some say that soul music is making a comeback, but for these two funk-soul brothers it really never went away. here we have two great workouts of classic covers that show love & respect for the originals while steering them directly at the dance-floor. you’ll know these tunes, but not like this!

one of the rarest funk 45s in existence and the rarest 45 on ellis taylor s forte label flipped with a previously unreleased acetate (has a little bit of background noise but what you gonna do when there is only one copy in the world, we did out best to make it sound good and it does). both tracks are stone cold deepfunk killers. super black is from the tapes and sounds amazing (better than the original) so go destroy a club with this.

“a safe place to be naked” is s. fidelity’s debut album, which will be released on may 5th via jakarta records. it features 12 tracks, capturing the producer’s quest for a fresh sound, which he elaborated over the last two years, locked in his tiny basement studio in berlin. evolving from there the he has also released an ep with feelin music in 2014, and “sidekicks”, a joint project with long-term friend and collaborator bluestaeb in 2016. by working with artists like tru thoughts singer harleighblu and label mate juju rogers as well as fellow producers bluestaeb and shuffle jack, his lp “a safe place to be naked” plays with sampled vocals and even his own voice – often distorted, but still present. s. fidelity was born in st. gallen, switzerland, mainly works in berlin and currently resides in london. as a producer he developed a unique and always driving sound, combining sampling techniques and classic beat making with unusual drum patterns, modern synth and atmospheric sound effects. s. fidelity’s laid-back eclecticism is marked by a deep knowledge and fascination for pop culture as a whole. his idea of fresh hiphop references to various genres, including jazz, ambient, disco and electronica. the lp contains an a2 poster & download code.

joe morgans stop them is killer late 70s militant roots, self-produced and originally released on his own jomor music house label (under the name billy joe morgan) in nyc. awesome vocal, majestic horns, heavy rhythm, a shining example of the brilliance of late 70s roots reggae and how perfectly suited the style was for the extended mix 12inch single discomix format. we ve added something special for this reissue (now on joe s main imprint fish tea). not only do we have the original 12inch replicated in full, but also an awesome and previously unreleased late 80s digital recut of the tune entitled warrior. unfortunately a dub version for this cut was never mixed, but we are grateful to have uncovered another gem from mr. morgan, one of the crucially under recorded and underrated artists of his time.

the secret initiative has been cloaked in secrecy since it’s inception in 2009.
over the past 8 years there has been a lot of speculation on who the artist(s) is/are behind this project. is it a collective of artists or a solo artist still remains to be answered. the secret initiative is a multi styled project ranging across the spectrum of acid techno, dub techno, hard techno & ebm mostly done in a 1990’s flavor but with a modern day punchy production sound. here on the latest release we have two peak time dance floor killers. “synesthete” a dark track-y techno climax-er with a whisper vocal sample repeating “i see the music, i hear the light” which builds into a monster of a track. on the flip side is the hard but hypnotic “return to mcmxc” which pays hommage to the 1990 frankfurt technoclub/dorian gray ebm techno sound.

first pressing of 1000 copies. mike lundy, lemuria, aura. this trifecta of inimitable hawaiian acts descended upon honolulu’s state-of-the-art broad recording studio in late 1979 to create what have now become the most coveted hawaiian funk/soul/jazz albums of the era. but whereas lemuria functioned as a short-lived studio band and mike lundy saw little success from his album’s release, aura - comprised of eight siblings from the mendoza family - remained a key figure in the nightlife scene of hawaii of the 1970s and early 1980s. each tune on their 1979 lp showcases the band’s unmatched musical talent that continues to astonish listeners in the 21st century.

nycs finest dj spinna comes through on local talk with an epic release that might surprise those of you expecting a more traditional soulful house workout ! this time spinna went out of his comfort zone with a deep warehouse journey that works equally well in dark european house clubs or at the shelter in nyc. tb or not tb got that perfect blend of space darkness, analogue synths and that old school house thump. initially it s quite raw and simplistic but the true magic of this track begins halfway in (be patient!). if there ever was a journey track, this is the one! but we re not done, on the flip spinna also comes through with a warm and melodic deep house jam destined for those very last small hours. oh btw...that analogue bassline got that extra. thang!

vinyl only, ahead of their collaborative album later this year, pier bucci and oskar szafraniec present their first sampler titled tipico latino featuring a remix by el_txef_a. emerging in the mid 00 s, chilean producer pier bucci first appeared on cadenza with a release alongside luciano himself before dropping multiple releases on crosstown rebels, including his acclaimed album familia . since then he s appeared on get physical and rawax, not to mention launching maruca music - a platform for his own music featuring heavyweight remixers such as baby ford and thomas melchior. szafraniec has been producing under different monikers since 13 years old, releasing two solo albums, recording alongside a guy called gerald in 2012/2013, and touring as a live performer. as oskar szafraniec his production debut was a collaboration alongside ricardo villalobos two years ago, but since then he s appeared on murge recordings and cyclo, as well as collaborating with pier bucci on rawax, who oskar met whilst touring japan tipico latino features gloomy spanish vocals as intricate elements are brought in and out of the mix across its nearly nine-minute duration. subtle throbs and echoing effects are blended with metallic percussion and deep synths for a wistful and mesmerising aesthetic. forbidden colours founder el_txef_a, whose remix talents have been recruited by permanent vacation, galaktika, akbal and culprit, reimagines the original providing a drawn out intro before exploding into a frenzy of crashing cymbals, animated acid and serene vocal moans.

this anthology brings to light the music of robert Æolus myers, featuring recordings from 1982 to 2006 that were previously available only on cassette or cd.
the music within “a retrospective” tells the story of a man whose music elevates its listeners to a place of inspiration and enlightenment. often ethereal, Æolus’ music is driven by synthesizers, melodic flutes, sweeping patterns, and subtle rhythms to seed inspiration from deep within the listener.
one might assume that Æolus carved a new path for electronic music in hawaii, but the islands never quite fully embraced the burgeoning new age scene that Æolus found himself a part of during the 1980s and the early 1990s.
few artists in hawaii have produced a body of work, let alone embarked on a musical journey, such as the one that Æolus has created.
for aloha got soul, this release marks a new chapter of bringing rare and relatively unknown music of hawaii to the surface.

passafire s longshot, the full-length follow up to vines (2013) and the interval ep (2015), finds the band continuing to stretch in new musical directions, while still maintaining a strong core of reggae elements. some songs tread into 90s grunge, hip hop and even current pop, but for hardcore passafire fans, this genre-bending style will come as no surprise for a band that has always pushed itself through experimentation, with a foundation of hummable hooks and vicious musicianship. a guest spot by rapper mr. lif also contributes a new angle on the song -blow. vines debuted at 1 on billboard record chart.

skyline remixes ep collects on vinyl some of the most exciting remix moments from the rapid ascent of izo fitzroy - the gospel & blues sensation whose debut album skyline has been lauded by both uk and international press. in its original form (produced by dr. rubberfunk) the album is a stunner but it soon became clear that a voice as distinctive and powerful as izo s was always going to suit the remix treatment.

lemmy ashton made quite a splash with his first outing on his own tnc label last year, and now hes back to follow up with another salvo of premium heaters geared towards disco friendly dancers. there s a chunky, looped up quality to silver suitcase with its insistent bass lick and slamming drums, but there s equal space for soul thanks to the string-loaded sample hook. by way of contrast lunaire fires up the acid flare and heads straight into a babbling brook of 303-related goodness. amsterdam rounds the ep off on a stomp, whipping up the kind of bombastic disco drama that would get studio 54 moving were it in action today

nice price deal !!! the melbourne deepcast is the brain child of andy hart and myles mac. both venerated djs in their own right, alongside harts production prowess, in 2009 the duo formed what was then a podcast and online hub intended for the sole purpose of celebrating quality house music from melbourne and beyond. it has since become a record label, but its original aim is undeniably its most important. the website has shone a light on all of the above names (and more), helping to create the sense that something special is happening in melbourne.

do you remember adolf filter… the swedish minimal electronics/synth duo? the 7” “the other hand on the knob” (petit enfant, 2008) is now a cult classic… the duo were also part of three compilations on enfant terrible… and now after all these years there is this new 7”… not truly new as these are tracks re-discovered from the et archive… but these two dark dance floor tracks are still way on top of the game… powerful and raw but catchy too… minimal elektro for both the old followers and new fans of the style…

new york native shawn o’sullivan returns to avian as 400ppm with debut lp, ‘fit for purpose’.
as an artist, o’sullivan has long since explored the juncture between hard-hitting, functional dance floor material and more lofty, conceptual work. from a purely structural standpoint, the artist’s return to avian bears all the hallmarks of previous output under the alias, utilising the same palette found on early ep’s for guy brewer’s label. stripped back and driven, the music marries caustic drum-machine polyrhythms with warping, pitch bent leads and characteristically atmospheric use of reverb. it’s a decidedly dance floor offering, but the music comes refracted through o’sullivan’s own lens, with plenty of elegant references to a career spent exploring much of the techno genre’s periphery, from noise to new wave. crushed vox bubble up from beneath wrought-iron percussion and the artist takes time to step away from high energy 4×4 workouts to explore more complex rhythmic structures and harsh, low tempo grooves.

the gooiland elektro compilation “unruhe” is a showcase of contemporary acid techno… spacey and trippy in the hands of zarkoff and distorted and freaked out by roberto auser… but also rather industrial when done by foql or pushed to the extreme by the untitled… this is acid as it should sound… edgy and daring tracks for illuminated heads instead of easy and boring sounds suitable for the masses… and as with all gooiland elektro releases this one is equally intense on the dance floor as with headphone playback.

while she may be based in berlin now, shanti celeste has deep roots within idle hands. from working behind the counter when the shop first opened to playing the label parties and co-running the neighbouring brstl label, shanti s contributions to the bristol house music scene have been ever-increasing as she has grown as an artist. having put out our her second ever 12inch,days like this, back in 2014, it gives us great pleasure to welcome her back as an internationally respected producer with a relentless gig schedule and a rich back catalogue of warm, heartfelt dance music that kicks where it counts. shanti s stylistic palette may have broadened over the past four years, but she s also retained a natural, unpretentious quality in her tracks that can span all manner of grooves and tempos. make time certainly chimes with her earliest house productions, but it s also offset by a wistful, meditative maturity. swooping pads, distant vocal threads and delicate fragments of breakbeat flirting in an aqueous soundscape whatever city shes based in now, this is surely deep house infused with a quintessential bristol ruffness. -thoughts- meanwhile speaks more to the artistic development shanti has undergone over the past few years, bearing the influence of melodic techno, electro and broken beat while striking a unique chord in the process. it s a hypnotic, alluring track that eschews basic dancefloor demands in favour of a more intimate headspace shaped out by snaking, polyrhythmic synth lines. both make time and thoughts stretch out over extended running times all the better for losing yourself in the heady atmosphere shanti has created on her very welcome return to idle hands.

much could be said about german house royalty boris dlugosch. from his teen dj years under the wings of fronts legendary klaus stockhausen in hamburg to his own marvelous tenure there that is pretty much synonymous with the explosion of acid house in its proto- and post-incarnations. one could examine his role as a herald of us garage and jersey house or as a remixer of underground gone pop records. but we will leave that and other stories for the front page soon. the traveller ep is the result of dlugosch and cassara meeting at a mutual friend of theirs, getting excited about their shared love for classic synths (see sh-101 for the traveller bass line) and exploiting the latter’s extensive synth collection. what you get: classic disco, french house, electro-funk, dj sound effects (that tractor plowed the front every night) and most of all fun, fun and a little bit of extra fun. chin-stroking impossible.…

most of the releases on imogen recordings to date have been from label boss ilija rudman, but this time around the disco house operation is turning to a relatively fresh proposition ourra. the alias of one simon tappenden, this time is the first dedicated release for ourra and he comes out swinging with the sultry slap-bass inflected title track boosted by a classic vocal turn from robert owens. rudman meanwhile weighs in heavy with no less than three remixes of the track on the b side, with the radiophonic mix standing out thanks to its stripped down effectiveness.

the sadly departed jaki liebezeit was the kind of drummer whose influence will be continually recognised over the decades to come. best known for his work in can, there are also many more sides to this singular sticksman, and emotional rescue has chosen to shine a light on his post-can period living in stollwerck. on the a side of this 7inch curio is the sound of phantom band with linear johnson & the protons. rush rush has a spiky new wave bent to it, but still liebezeit s drumming stands out. the b side drums off chaos need little explanation its the sound of one of the all-time drumming greats letting rip in a ferocious blast of percussive abandon.

much may have changed over a two-decade period, but drumcode s commitment to releasing the scene s most cutting-edge and refined techno remains resolute. 2016 saw releases from heavy hitters such as adam beyer, alan fitzpatrick, dense & pika, sam paganini, joseph capriati and waff, as well as a much coveted moby remix package. the label pushes forwards again in 2017, bringing fail-safe, club-ready music to the techno community

after 10 years of releasing on some of the most respected labels in the scene including 31 records, commercial suicide and samurai music, soul intent is to release his first solo album via his own imprint, lossless music. the album features collaborations with chromatic, jazz vocalist sue mae, as well as his old dataset band mate chris gittins.
in soul intent’s own words: “i wanted the make an album that had continuity but also showed all the vibes and styles i m into as a producer, dj and general lover of this music. hopefully it’s an album of substance and people enjoy the journey.”

picking up right where ep 1 left off, ep 2 kicks things off with a bang. first up is catz n dogz and yotam avnis for blakkat a high pace burner ideally suited for dance floors from panorama bar to under the leds of watergate and every club in-between. the duo return with the bright version of afterglow for the second cut on ep 2 and aptly titled, it pushes an intense, glitter filled ride to its limits. embarking onto the b-side, o.a. peas from heavy hitter eats everything & lord leopard take a trip down memory lane with a heavily sample based feel good tune that will absolutely demolish dance floors worldwide. rounding out the ep is a final collaboration between catz n dogz and reno wurzbacher with ma people and its by far the smoothest and most laid back tune of the bundle, but never does it let you rest as a mesmerizing groove and lush atmospherics tell a deep, complex tale of late nights and early mornings.

jacob long s work as earthen sea has already firmly established itself on itals lovers rock label, but here the san francisco-based artist is branching out to a sympathetic ear silent season. much like other artists on the label, long s fusion of heavy atmospherics and submerged techno make for a compelling, immersive listen. at times, such as on -the sky is a sea of darkness-, he opts for a looming set of pads and textures that bear down on the listener. elsewhere, more delicate sounds interact across the frequency range, but what binds the record together is the weight of the ambience long is so adept at crafting. without a thread of a kick drum pulse to be heard throughout, it s another strong step on for earthen sea.

brendon moeller makes a neat fit on vancouver island s finest outpost of dusky avant-techno. moeller has of course turned his hand to many different shades of rhythm over the course of his career, but there s something in his blown out, dub-smoked sound that aligns perfectly with the autumnal introspection of silent season. the results live up to the promise, from the warm but melancholic throb of glow to the oppressive sub pulse of abandon. the hike takes things into more abstract territory, and then yearning rounds the record off on an oblique swinging techno tip trasnmitted from out in the leftfield.
